A Film about Climate Change and Food Scarcity: Soylent Green

Soylent Green (1973) is a classic science-fiction film starring Charleton Heston and Edward G. Robinson. It's set in New York City in 2022, after the world's climate has collapsed due to global warming and most of the world's plant life has died. People survive by eating a processed food product called Soylent Green. But just what is it made of, some curious people begin to wonder? And why do the people who know the secret want to die or end up being murdered?

We will be watching scenes from Soylent Green in class, and students will be required to view the entire film over the coming weekend. It's available at Polvos Azules (under the title Cuando El Destino Nos Alcance), as well as online at Google Video.

Click here to see the film online, without English or Spanish subtitles.

I'll be handing out a Student Viewing Guide tomorrow.

  2. Yes, it has a good plot. Don't read about the ending ahead of time -- that would ruin the surprise.:)

  5. this movie seems great...global warming is an interesting topic to discuss, moreover if we're starting to see some critical changes on our enviroment and which will continue if human kind dont take conscience about taking care of future resources.

  6. Maybe on the year that the movie was produced (1973), this could have seemed more believable than what we can think of now. Being only twelve years away from the movie's setting, with the constant technological advances it is surprising to watch about this predictions. Nevertheless, global warming is a topic of huge importance now a days and I believe that not many people are aware of it and its terrible consequences, so this can be a good movie to give people a heads up.

  7. Yes, when the movie came out the year 2022 seemed so far away; now it's right around the corner.

Even if it's more than 30 years old, I think the film still does a good job of warning about the dangers of not caring for the planet. The film makes it personal; if plants die off, none of us will have anything good to eat.

I heard the ambassador from England explain this to an audience in Lima last year. She was saying that if the oceans heat up too much, the fish will start to die and we won't be able to have ceviche here in Lima. That got people thinking!
